our history

Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church, under the Lordship of Jesus Christ, is committed to following the Baptist Church Covenant.
Mt.Olive exists to train and nurture each disciple as mandated by Christ in Matthew 28:19-20; Mark 16:15; and Acts 1:8, to proclaim the gospel to everyone and to worship and praise God.  As a servant church, Mount Olive seeks to be a body that unselfishly ministers to people in the community in Jesus' name.

THE BEGINNING
In 1923 Mount Olive was organized by the late Mrs. Mattie Thrash, Mrs. Mary Hill, Mrs. Mamie Stennis, Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Figgers, Mrs. Sally Brown, and Mrs. Parthenia Hanible Payton.  Reverend John Evans conducted the first services under a brush harbor.
Mount Olive's first structure was a wood frame with wood burning heating and kerosene burning lamps.  The only running water came from a creek behind the church.  It was built under the administration of Rev. S. D. Hammon.
The wood structure was bricked during Reverend J. R. Porter's administration.  Rev. Porter also improved the baptismal pool, closed the balcony and established a library.  He even built the choir loft.

Mount Olive TODAY
Reverend A. D. Lewis currently pastors Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church.  Rev. Lewis is no stranger to Mount Olive.  During his first stint from 1983-1994, the church experienced significant accomplishments.  The trustee board, a children's choir, and church sports teams were established.  Scholarship funds increased and church records were computerized.  Many of these programs continue or are being reinstituted during his second administration.  Additionally, the pastor directed plans for the church to retire its debt.  That has occurred.
Rev. Lewis has staunchly supported and improved the following ministries:  Deacons, Deaconesses, Mission, Sunday School, transportation, health, ushers, power point and audio, couples, singles, and new members.  Rev. Lewis expanded orientation for new members by creating a class for ages 12 and under.  He is president of the East Mississippi Baptist State Congress of Christian Education.
